| Archaic Chinese artifacts are difficult to identify with certainty. Although this censer, or liding, had been cleaned it was clearly an item which demanded further investigation. Metallurgical tests confirmed the piece to be from the Shang Dynasty (1600-1100BC).
The censer sold above auction estimate in a specialist London sale of Chinese works of art.
